Hammer Drills, Do I Need One?

This is a question I get asked occasionally, and the answer involves a couple of questions first. This article breaks down the features and if they are needed for your particular project.

What is a Hammer Drill?

Hammer drills are similar to standard drills but have a hammering function.

The hammer drives the bit into the material as the bit turns. Thus allowing the bit to penetrate rigid materials such as concrete, brick, or block much faster than a standard drill.

Multiple working modes; rotary drill, hammer drill, or hammer.

A three-position switch on most brands and sizes allows the user to switch between the different modes.

– Position one indicates a rotary drill, no hammer function.

– Position two indicates rotary drill with the hammer.

– Position three indicates just the hammer, which is best suited for chiseling or breaking concrete, bricks, and such.

What is a Hammer Drill used for?

The most common use for a hammer drill is drilling holes into hard porous materials, such as concrete, block, and brick. The hammer impact, when combined with the drill bit turning, drill through most materials quickly.

Corded Hammer Drill or Battery Powered?

There are two types of hammer drills: corded or cordless. Corded hammer drills offer greater power and faster drilling speeds. In addition, the drill won’t slow down as cordless drills do when their batteries die.

Cordless hammer drills are convenient and feel more like standard drills. Personally, I have found them lackluster in performance, which is not necessarily a bad thing. They seem to provide the perfect combination of torque and hammer for softer tile.

Pro tip: if you need to drill a hole into ceramic tile, use a diamond-coated drill or hole saw. 🙂
